Okay, so Nintendo has done this already with the Wii U and their tablet controller, I am still going to discuss this cool mod for the defunct Sega Dreamcast. What has happened here is a hardware modder known as Fibbef has put an LCD screen inside of a modded Sega Dreamcast controller. Sure there were some hacking licenses taken to make this work but that doesn’t make this any less of a cool mod.
Long story short, the Sega Dreamcast controller has been widened a bit to fit the LCD screen and hardware that powers everything. There were two controllers destroyed to make this mod which sucks but otherwise is a worthy loss for such a cool hardware hack.
The controllers were cut in half while the memory card connectors were desoldered. Fibbef built a custom adapter for the LCD screen to receive the video signal and power via a standard USB printer cable. There are more hardware trickery inside the controller but I won’t waste your time stumbling over that stuff.
Much like earlier attempts at stuff like this, the screen is pretty small so playing Role Playing Games (RPG’s) is probably out of the question due to the small text onscreen. That means Skies of Arcadia or the Phantasy Star games off the Genesis collection are probably going to be too frustrating to enjoy with this mod. Same thing for playing shooters like Mars Matrix that put a ton of bullets onscreen at a time. Playing these games on the Sega Dreamcast controller screen would probably end in your getting frustrated. Some games that may be just right for this mod include Zombie Revenge, the Street Fighter games, the Power Stone games and other action titles.
What retro consoles had a portable created, by the manufacturer, which could play the home console games?
I wil cover other mods as I discover them.
