Kickstarter: Starr Mazer Mixes Monkey Island with R-Type but Does it Work

R-Type and Monkey Island are two iconic, though very different, games from the late 80’s and early 90’s era of gaming, affectionately known by gamers as the 8/16-bit time period.  On one hand, you have a side scrolling, 2D, arcade shooter franchise and on the other you have a snarky story about an island and the inhabitants that live there.  What Starr Mazer is looking to do is bring those to genres together in a unique blend of the best qualities of each.

In Starr Mazer you are tasked with doing more than just wandering the halls of a space station with some shooter interludes to break up the brain teasing.  No, this is not a futuristic Monkey Island, nor is Starr Mazer out to be a more fleshed out story version of R-Type.  According to the Kickstarter page Starr Mazer will seamlessly mix the two genres together in a compelling manner.starr-mazer_screenshot-02

For instance, rather than beating the boss and going to the next level, in Starr Mazer you will have to negotiate with the repair shop, your ship won’t magically fix itself- what do you think this is, an arcade shooter?  You will need to talk up the bar patrons to get bits and pieces of information about the upcoming battles, search out equipment and avoid trouble, does this ring a bell with any movie goers reading this?starr-mazer_screenshot-01

Using a proprietary engine called Open-Middled Gameplay Narrative Starr Mazer will feel more like a series of games all wrapped into one convenient package.  What this engine does is provide you with several exits in each scene, seamless integration into others and these scenes are randomized.  Basically, odds are you won’t see the exact same game, this is not a Full Motion Video game like Night Trap.starr-mazer_screenshot-06

Fans of either genre that want to see something different probably should check out Starr Mazer on Kickstarter.
