New Game: Snake Comes to the Sony PocketStation

Ah, the PocketStation from Sony, a device that never came to North America, at least officially.  Sure, you could import this little device but it was prohibitively expensive and there were precious few games that made the leap across the pond with their PocketStation content intact.  Homebrew developers are a wild bunch, they just won’t take “your platform is dead” for an answer and keep plugging away at new games for old platforms.  The PocketStation is no different as we are now seeing Worm make the jump to the little Sony hand held.

Created by Sebastian Mihai, Pocket Worm may be better recognized as the classic Snake game.  The premise is the same in Pocket Worm as it is in the classic- you control a line that slithers around the screen eating random dots.  With each dot eaten your line grows by at least one more link which increases the difficulty.

pocketwormIn most versions of Snake you have obstacles show up which must be avoided, you also cannot hit your own body.  As the game progresses, your own body is your biggest obstacle.  This is the simplistic beauty of Snake and Pocket Worm on the PocketStation.  Pocket Worm has you eating fruit, 30 pieces total, while avoiding your ever lengthening body.  As you eat the pieces of food your snake will speed up, increasing the difficulty involved.

Pocket Worm uses the full screen of the PocketStation but only part of it is the actual playfield.  The screen of the PocketStation is 32×32 pixels while Pocket Worm uses 32×25 of those.  This is so that there is room for the score, otherwise you are guessing as to your progress.

Snake games may not be the first choice for many gamers but considering the simplistic nature of the hardware, it fits the Pocket Station quite well.
