There is no doubt that Metroid has been a success story for Nintendo over the years. There are only a couple of Nintendo platforms that have not received a Metroid game, one of those platforms was a certified commercial failure and the other struggled against the competition- coincidence? I don’t think so, Metroid is a popular franchise and with any decent amount of popularity will come imitators. HYPERION is one such title that shares a lot in common with Metroid. This game is also coming out on the Commodore 64, to be released by Psytronik and RGCD later this year.
The first thing about HYPERION that you will notice is the long introduction video that sets up the story. I am not sure if this intro is going to remain in the final version or not. If the intro is removed something needs to be there in its place because it helps set the mood quite well. So far only some still screens are shown at the end of the video, not a lot to go off of but there is a STRONG Metroid feel to the levels and the overall design.
HYPERION pulls a lot from the Metroid universe including angled shooting, character in a space suit, exits and entrances for the various areas that look strikingly like Nintendo’s classic. Your character can even change into a ball, just like Metroid, to reach areas that are only accessible through small tunnels and holes. Personally, I think this is going to be an awesome title and one to keep an eye out for.
Georg Rottensteiner and Trevor Storey are responsible for HYPERION while Saul Cross handled the audio work. It is obvious that this team are huge fans of Nintendo’s classic franchise. Release is expected by the end of 2015.
