Ah, the Super Nintendo seems to be getting all of the love lately, doesn’t it? Shadowhawk is getting a release by Rose Colored Gaming and Collectorvision are continuing onward with Justice Beaver, just to name a couple of new games. An independent developer called 1985 Alternativo have something to say about the fact that the Sega Genesis still has plenty of life left in it. 1985 Alternativo have even released a video that shows off Antarex.
I will be the first to tell you that we need more variety in retrogaming homebrew. We just see so damn many scrolling shooters, especially on Sega Dreamcast and Neo Geo, which is sometimes a little disheartening. Now, with that having been said, I will also tell you that I would rather see scrolling shooters, that are good, rather than no new games for classic platforms.
Antarex shows a lot of promise in this video, 1985 Alternativo have done their homework. Anyone that remembers watching classic anime such as Robotech will get a tinge of nostalgia when watching this gameplay video. Much like Heavy Unit (Genesis, PC-Engine: Japan) and Android Assault: The Revenge of Bari-Arm (Sega CD), Antarex features a ship that can transform into a giant robot armed to the teeth. While seemingly not a big deal for many, anime fans know how cool this can be, if done right,
Shown off in the video for Antarex we see many things that were not exactly commonplace in games when the Sega Genesis was commercially viable. We get an introduction segment and then thrown into the mix and conversational storyline development. Also, line scrolls. These were a big deal when Street Fighter II hit the Super Nintendo but in shooters, it is not commonplace at all, though cool when used. Sure, in the past we saw some shooter games here and there that had some of these traits, it was not all that often.
When I know more about Antarex I will update everyone.
