When Nintendo launched their 64-Bit beast of a console it was at an interesting time. The competition were busying themselves with 32-Bit CPU’s and the games that came along with that level of graphical prowess. Nintendo decided to not even bother with the 32-Bit generation and leap frog to the next logical plateau, 64-Bit. Of course, looking back now, we all know that all of that talk about 32/64-Bit is just a bunch of PR malarkey and that it came down to the games and how well your chosen system played them. One amazing title on the Nintendo 64 was Super Mario 64 which holds the distinction of being the only launch title for a new console to sell 1 to 1 with the system. Now, homebrew fans have ported this iconic title to the grandfather of consoles, the Atari 2600.
Obviouly this is not going to look 100% like Super Mario 64, hell, had this article been titled anything else you probably would believe that is the name of this game. That is the world that Atari 2600 games, and their fans, must endure though. Graphically the system is simply not powerful enough to do a whole lot (part of the reason that gaming probably suffered the crash of 84).![]()
This version of Super Mario 64 has been able to squeeze in the castle, complete with a decent sense of depth as you approach it and an enemy or two. As you can see in the video, World 1 features an enemy that can be jumped on to dispatch and an obstacle of some sort, which can be jumped to avoid.
While worlds apart both in platform power and the end result, Super Mario 64 on the Atari 2600 versus the N64 is a no contest. The Atari version though is interesting for what it is, just don’t expect a miracle. Work continues on this version as new things are being added and things that are broken are getting fixed.
