Repro: Rose Colored Gaming Unveils Star Fox 2 for Super Nintendo Special Edition Box, Colored Cartridge

We don’t see this level of work put into most reproductions but Rose Colored Gaming are going above and beyond the norm.  Everyone knows that Star Fox 2 never saw an official release by Nintendo themselves.  That is a sad fact.  Now, Star Fox 2 will see a release, even if extremely limited, through a special edition box set, just look at the pic after the jump.

Star Fox 2 is a game that was originally intended for the Super Nintendo, as the follow up to the hugely popular Star Fox.  Both titles use the Super FX chip, SF2 just uses a newer version which allowed more 3D special effects and game play.Star Fox 2 Nintendo Super NES retro game rose colored gaming reproduction (4)

There are multiple versions of Star Fox 2 floating around on the Internet in varying degrees of completion.  The most popular of which is a fan translation that uses the, nearly complete, Japanese version.  As of this writing, I am still waiting for word back from Rose Colored Gaming as to which version they are using on this special edition release of Star Fox 2.

Update: The version of Star Fox 2 used for this release is the final beta with the English translation patch applied.

Reasons for Star Fox 2 not being released, even though the Japanese version was nearly complete, are unclear.  It has been rumored that the reason for holding Star Fox 2 back was the impending release of the Nintendo 64.  Strangely, the N64 did not make it to market for another year and a half after the planned release of Star Fox 2.  Such a shame that this iconic game was never released, officially.Star Fox 2 Nintendo Super NES retro game rose colored gaming reproduction (5)

The total number of Star Fox 2 special edition sets that will be available from Rose Colored Gaming is unclear.  Rumors place it squarely between 50 and 100, either of which is HORRIBLY understocked for this type of release.  If you are keen on getting the special edition Star Fox 2 release, I suggest you be on your toes and watch the Rose Colored Gaming website closely.Star Fox 2 Nintendo Super NES retro game rose colored gaming reproduction (3)

It would’ve been cool had they implemented light up catridges back in the day

I agree, completely. Light up cartridges would have been so cool back in the day.

      • Matt says:

Had Nintendo or Sega implemented that just the aesthetics alone might of had a positive benefit in the console wars. Simple but very effective.

Imagine the possibilities they could have created.

Instead of just onscreen colors telling you the race is about to start, they could have had Red, Yellow and Green lights on the cartridge light up. Sure it might seem distracting but imagine in a dark room how it would work, you could use your peripheral vision to tell when to start hitting the gas while keeping your eyes on the screen.

Same thing for games like Gunstar Heroes that flash onscreen when a boss is approaching, they could have had red lights flash on the cartridge to alert you.

Missed opportunity for cartridge based consoles, for sure.

  3. […] Ah, the classic Nintendo 64 Zelda games were quite interesting, they were the first foray into the 3D realm for the franchise and for many, they were system sellers.  Fans showed enough support for these two 64-Bit games that Nintendo re-released them on the Gamecube (and later the Virtual Console).  Now a group of fans are working on a third quest, affectionately titled- Legend of Zelda the Third Quest (following Legend of Zelda: Master Quest on the Nintendo Gamecube).  What is cool about this is, well, it is Zelda and it is being handled by fans of the series that want to see more, not people trying to take Nintendo properties and sell them.
