The Commodore Amiga is getting more and more popular with homebrew developers over the last year or so. The person behind Super Ted, Mikael Persson, is back with Smurf Rescue which uses the same game engine – the Backbone Engine. Smurf Rescue holds the distinction of being only the second Smurf game to grace the Commodore Amiga platform, the other “Smurf Hunt” is a public domain game that was programmed using SUECK and it is very much not family friendly. Smurf Rescue is more in line with the show though.
Smurf Rescue puts you in control of Smurfette, depending on what season of the show she is either the only female or one of two. Gargamel has smurfnapped all of the other Smurfs and it is up to you to guide Smurfette through several side scrolling levels. Each level contains a few Smurfs in cages (Gargamel is kind of a jerk that way) that must be rescued. Unlike most other 2D action games, you are not going to complete the levels simply by passing all of the obstacles and reaching the other side. No, in Smurf Rescue you are going to have to save all of those Smurfs from their cages. Once you save the last one, the next level will load up.
Boss levels require the usual beating o the boss character to move on.
The graphics are a mish mash from other games. The Smurf’s themselves are from the Sega Genesis game that starred the Smurfs. The level tiles are from a Commodore Amiga title called Lollypop. The cutscenes are pulled from the cartoon that we all know and, either hate or, love. The animation is downgraded to 32 colors so the results are hit or miss as far as quality.
Since this is only the second Smurf game on the Commodore Amiga, and the only one that is really family friendly, it wins on merit alone. If you are a fan of the cartoon, check out this homebrew game.
