The Commodore line of computers (Amiga and 64) are quite prolific with the homebrew community- the fans just won’t let these platforms die. Grubz is one such new homebrew title that fans of Worms will want to keep an eye on. Grubz will be released by Protovision (what movie used that same name for a gaming company?). Right now, there is only a five level preview available but it is an interesting preview.
The Singular Crew, the team behind Grubz, are quite savvy with the Commodore 64/128 line of gaming computers. They are optimizing Grubz to run not only on stock hardware but also hardware expansions. The SuperCPU 64/128, IDE64 and CMD drives are all supported by Grubz, or will be when it is released.
Below are the details and a short to do list:
- 2 screen multicolor AGSP scroll with open top/bottom border.
- 16 sprite multiplexer with interlacing (only if really necessary) and splitted hires/multi sprites.
- Particle effect for explosions.
- Possible to play agains 1 or more computer players.
- Keyboard, and 4 player adapter supported.
- Fast math routines, movement of weapons/worms with wind calculated.
- C64 version with illegal opcodes and C128 2 MHz support on border for optimal speed. SCPU version works everywhere, but is expected to run with 20 MHz.
- Currently 2 weapons: bazoka and dinamit.
- Experimental ethernet support for local network game using two computers (TFE and RR-net works, ETH64 planned)
- Simple sound effects, random placement of worms and changing wind.
Still to do:
- More weapons
- More levels
- User interface
- etc.
Future updates will possibly include multiplayer through networking and a few other interesting additions that it is too early to discuss.
Worms style games are popular and interesting amongst many of our readers. Show these guys some support as they work to finish Grubz. For now, grab the demo from their website and enjoy it while we wait for the full game to be released.
