The game, It Came from the Desert, is a classic Cinemaware title that hit multiple computers platforms and the Turbo Grafx-16 CD-ROM a few decades ago. Recently, Cinemaware announced they were going to release the Sega Genesis version (almost completely different than other versions) but that version has yet to materialize. An enterprising fan has taken it upon himself to re-imagine this classic as a First Person Shooter called “Did It Come from the Desert?” and it is now available for the Commodore Amiga.
First up, this is a mod of another title, Gloom Deluxe, for the Commodore Amiga. This is not a standalone game, you will have to jump through some hoops to get it running but that is half the fun of playing retro games, right?
Did It Come from the Desert features 18 levels of ant blasting mayhem that are sure to make you forget that horrible “8 Legged Freaks” gamevertisement, if you even knew about that game. If you did not know about that horrendous David Arquette laden cesspool of a game then please disregard this whole paragraph.
Did It Come from the Desert is a great looking title. The draw distance is extremely far away, the ants blow up in multiple chunks when they die, and the game flows rather smoothly as you patrol. Another thing that is interesting about Did It Come from the Desert is that the enemy body parts hang around, they don’t just fade away immediately after exploding. While that may seem like a small thing to find impressive, it is kind of a big deal. What other First Person Shooter titles can you name that leave debris around the level? Not many. I can only think of one, Space Hulk on 3DO (the version I played) and PSOne and I think Sega Saturn.
