We have seen hardware mods for various consoles such as the Sega Genesis and the Super Famicom but what about the other 16-Bit console? The Turbo Grafx-16 doesn’t get a lot of love nowadays for some reason. Thanks to Joshua Jaeger’s wife, an artist/designer, the Turbo Grafx-16 finally is getting some overdue love. The Legendary Axe Edition of the Turbo Grafx-16 looks freaking awesome. Video after the jump.
As you can see in the video, this Turbo Grafx-16 mod is all cosmetic. There is a skull, axe (of course) and a giant spider on top. Around the front, back and sides, is a ground looking design that is made to appear to be holding up a lush green looking area that could be straight out of the game. The power switch is now a skull, how cool is that?
The really cool stuff though, is that spire that lurks over the card slot, ready to bite your hand. Interesting to know is that the spider’s eyes and the Turbo Grafx-16 logo now light up while the system is powered on. That is cool, especially in darkened rooms- seeing those pulsating eyes just staring back at you from the console. That could probably get a little freaky as you get into playing Legendary Axe and some of the other classic Turbo Grafx-16 titles (what are some of your favorites?).
Mods like this are cool, even though they are, sadly, one of a kind creations. If only someone could find a way to make these things in, even, limited quantities it would be cool to have a chance to own one.
What other systems are due for a modification like this? The 3DO? The Atari 2600? What game would you use as the basis for a mod like this on what system?
