The Sega Genesis received a form of online multiplayer capabilities with the release of the X-Band adapter and there was that whole Sega Channel thing (which was not multiplayer as far as I know). Now, thanks to Ukrainian hardware developer Krikzz, the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is getting another online option, one that brings the online gaming into the 21st century (X-Band was limited to dial up speed).
Right now, gamers that are wanting to get online and beat up their friends in Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition will have to wait. This is a work in progress and right now, only one game works- Battle City. Battle City is a port of the same title from the Nintendo Famicom over to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.
The requirements to get the online working with the Mega Everdrive is not as simple as putting the ROMs on your SD card and loading them on your console. First, you will need an USB cable to connect your Genesis/Mega Drive to your Internet enabled computer (laptop or desktop). Second, you will need specially modified ROMs that are capable of understanding the online capabilities you are now wanting to use.
Since you need specifically modified ROM files you won’t be able to simply download that latest homebrew release and play it with your friend across the country. This can be problematic since Krikzz seems to be the only person that knows what modifications will need to be made to get games online. If some of the more popular titles are made available with the necessary modifications then the Mega Everdrive may pick up in sales, otherwise, it is still just a great flash cart for the homebrew community to enjoy new titles on the actual hardware.
I will do my best to keep you up to date on the Mega Everdrive and if there are any other titles modified to work with the online capabilities.

Oh my goodness this is siiiiiiiiiiiick…….!
That is what I thought when I saw it. Great choice of words!
Great
It is an interesting development. It will be even more interesting to see what games are made available for this online capability. I hope more homebrew are made available that support this.
At the end of the day though, most gamers are going to only be interested in the more popular, commercial, games that are modded to work with this such as Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter II and Sonic 2 (a lot of 2’s there).
Good to hear that.
