Bungie Shows The Macintosh Can Rock 1st Person Shooters With Marathon – Today In History – December 21st, 1994

20 years ago, Bungie (the company behind the Halo series and Destiny) launched a little game on the Macintosh computer called Marathon.  Macintosh gamers were waiting with baited breath for this title, not only because it was to ship with up to eight player network multiplayer (over the Internet gaming was still mostly a pipe dream) but it was the Mac answer to the PC’s runaway success story called Doom.

Bungie (creator of Halo and Destiny) has been in business for 20 years. Those who still own a Mac will remember that back then Murathon was the first Bungie game. Gamers eagerly awaited their release because it would enable high-speed multiplayer internet gaming and spearhead the mac gaming industry at the time, thanks to its similarity with an acclaimed PC game called Doom.

You may know id Software as the creators of the video game Doom. Marathon, however, is set much farther out in space and is a much lesser known game. The aliens in this game tries to radically alter the earth’s atmosphere by bombarding it with inexhaustible rays from space.

When Marathon was released, players were given a well-executed story conveyed mainly through the computer terminals. Behind each terminal, there was an AI in charge of different areas of the colony (Marathon)

Marathon is available on many platforms, including on the Windows 95.

Light Gun games gave new life to older consoles with code from Bungie’s famous franchise Marathon created by a community of developers.

Thank you, Bungie, for taking a chance and creating a trilogy of titles that was not only iconic when it was released but still relevant to many gamers today.
