Unreleased: Chip’s Challenge for the Nintendo Entertainment System Sells at Auction, Preservation Still Option

Chip’s Challenge is a puzzle game that only saw release on computers and the Atari Lynx back in the early 90’s.  Recently though, Chip’s Challenge was found for the Nintendo Entertainment System, at least a prototype was since this version of the game was never released.  The chips that are visible are marked 18th May 1992.  Interestingly enough, this title is not preserved online in any fashion (no one knew about it till this auction).

As mentioned already, Chip’s Challenge was best known as an Atari Lynx hand held release.  The idea is to navigate the levels based on the obstacles that are present.  Some levels will require you to avoid enemies, push objects and collect items such as keys and other things that will assist you in the level.Chips Challenge Nintendo Entertainment System Unreleased Prototype (2)

Retrocollect mentions that the NES version of Chip’s Challenge might have been the version that was shown off at the Summer Consumer Electronics Show that ran during May 1992.  According to the Ebay listing, this is a demo version of the game, not the full game.  Being a demo there is a level skip feature and other options that would not be available in a commercial product.

Why is “Preservation Still an Option”?  Because of the sheer number of groups that seem to only exist to preserve these unreleased games.  There are countless teams out there that have proven time and time again that they are capable of pulling together to purchase an expensive title, such as Chip’s Challenge, and then release it for free.Chips Challenge Nintendo Entertainment System Unreleased Prototype (3)

Hopefully preservation steps will be taken on this title since it is 22 years old, and getting older.  That means the information is possibly going to simply not be there at some point in the future, those chips won’t hold out forever- they are not Atari 2600 chips.
