Acclaim may be dead and gone now (they were one of the first licensees for the original Nintendo Entertainment System back in the mid 80’s) but it can never be said that they didn’t try new things in their games. They may not have been successful with many of their titles but they tried anyhow. Take Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M. for the Nintendo 64 for instance, it is a first person shooter (FPS) and a licensed one at that.
Armorines is based on the comic of the same name, by Valiant Comics which I believe became a subsidiary of Acclaim at some point through a buyout. Basically, the Armorines were created as a solution to a threat (X-O Manowar) and that situation cooled and a new threat reared its ugly head, Spider Aliens. That is where the Nintendo 64 title comes into play, combating the Spider Aliens.
Check out the commercial that Acclaim aired for the game and judge for yourself. Just remember, this was made back when First Person Shooters were still experimenting quite a bit with their identity, and not in a good way that was cool.
To grab a copy of Armorines of your own, check out Ebay or Amazon for a deal.
