Remember the good old days of playing Pokemon on your Game Boy? Ever wish you could play Gold/Silver in glorious 3D? Now you can thanks to a dedicated fan over on Game Jolt. The idea behind this fan game is to recreate the whole Pokemon Gold/Silver game world and the developer is well on his way to accomplishing this feat.
The game world is 3D but it is 3D like it was back in the 90’s. Sprite based looking rather than full on polygon (think Doom rather than Quake). The movement is fluid and clean and it appears that most of the early stuff is included down to paths, fences and non-player characters (NPC) to interact with.
Speaking of NPC’s there seems to be the full dialog tree available depending on who you talk with. Yes, you can battle Pokemon in this version so get ready to catch them all. The Pokemon are animated in a sprite format on top of a 3D game world (like Doom). Calling forward your chosen Pokemon results in a move list where you select your move and you get the results. So far, there doesn’t seem to be any battle animations outside of your Pokemon simply flexing, swaying or generally standing there waiting for the battle to be over.
Battle animations are probably going to be added in a later update. NPC animations need work too but again, probably something that will be addressed in a future update. What is here is a serviceable game that you can play right now. If the recent actions by Nintendo hold true, we won’t have to worry about a cease and desist letter being sent to the developer. That is huge news.
You can grab Pokemon 3D Version 0.30 over on Game Jolt.
