Take your pick on the name, Rendering Ranger or Targa, either way, this is a phenomenal looking title for the Super Nintendo. The interesting thing about this title is that it was, for the longest time, a Japanese exclusive. The Japanese version is quite pricey and one that not many gamers have seen in the plastic. Last year, a prototype of Targa (the planned name for the North American version) was purchased on Ebay by the Nolan brothers. These guys bend over backwards to preserve classic titles that would otherwise probably be lost to the general gamer. They also do their best to give back to the collecting community by releasing cartridges and the like of these games. These guys also are the ones behind Bill’s Tomato Game for the Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive.
If you are not familiar with Targa then sit back and listen to this tale. Never mind, wrong game. Targa was created by Manfred Trenz, the creator Turrican, which ended up being his last game. If you have never played a Turrican game then this will be an all new adventure and you will miss a lot of inside jokes as they were. Fans of Turrican can easily see the influence of Turrican, it is just under the surface of Targa.
Okay, now the fun part. There is a limited release of cartridges, 150 to be exact. After those 150 are sold the ROM will be made available for download. Retrocollect reports that about half of those carts are still available so it is not too late to make that SNES collector in your life happy as hell with a reproduction cart of an unreleased title. Can’t get much more special than that.
