Bandit Gaming- SuperTed Comes to the Commodore Amiga, Brings Along Friends

The Commodore Amiga is a computer has entered the annals of history with a more than slightly positive image (not many platforms can say this).  This positive image has never been more apparent than in the plethora of games still being made for Commodore’s super computer.  One such new game is SuperTed which is based on the Welsh cartoon/children’s book of the same name.  Eventually SuperTed did come to North America so this is not completely a missed license opportunity (though this is a fan game, not an official release).

The object of SuperTed is all about surviving the onslaught of enemies in a scrolling shooter style game.  What is interesting about this game is the mixture of cameos from Amiga alumni such as Zool (quick, name the consoles his game hit), Lemmings and more.  Mikael Persson has gone to great lengths to stay true to the source material while mixing in additional things that will make old school Amiga gamers smile.

SuperTed must catch up to, and overtake, Texas Pete who has kidnapped Spotty (SuperTed’s best friend).  To do this, you have to guide SuperTed through five levels of progressing difficulty.

Graphically, SuperTed screams child safe with bright colors and clean graphics.  This almost looks like the people behind Zool simply did a shooter rather than a side scrolling action game.  Stuff just looks like it is a candy/plastic material which is quite cool- not unlike Mario Kart 64, mixed with some stuff that is obviously flat shaded sprites.

SuperTed was created using a game development program called “Backbone”.  Backbone is a program that can create side scrolling games such as SuperTed or Super Mario Bros, overhead games such as Gauntlet or Chaos Engine or Cannon Fodder.  The classics.
