It is getting to the point where Flappy Bird, or clones of it, have nearly reached every conceivable platform that it can hit. Now, we can scratch off an unlikely candidate in the NEC Super Grafx (what is left though?). This version of Flappy Bird does offer some unique additions to the tired, and infuriating, formula which does entice multiple play through attempts.
The biggest addition, and the most enticing element added in this version is medals. They act somewhat like trophies by which when you complete certain milestones in the game, by passing a certain number of pipes, you are rewarded with a medal. These medals are other consoles and gaming related icons. There is a Mega Drive/Sega Genesis (competing system to the PC-Engine/Turbo Grafx-16) and even a PC-Engine controller among many others. While not a game changer, at least it is something to shoot for when avoiding those automatically moving pipes. Better than nothing.
Everything else is the same in the Super Grafx version of Flappy Bird. You tap a button to flap your bird wings and you rise up the screen. Don’t touch anything and your bird drops like a rock (what car manufacturer used the term “Like a rock” in their television ads?). The challenge comes in the oncoming pipes that must be flown between and avoided. Touch the ground or the pipes and it is game over. This sounds incredibly simple but if you have never played a Flappy Bird game then you don’t know just how excruciatingly upsetting this game can get. If you don’t have anger based tendencies, give this game a few tries and you just might develop them.
The Super Grafx, of all platforms, certainly didn’t jump to the front of my mind when thinking “Why hasn’t Flappy Bird hit this platform?” It is here and it at least adds a little bit to the basic game to maybe bring in fans that are now tired of the game. For addicts here is another version to play and earn some bragging rights with.
