Prototype: Sonic X-Treme in Working Form Found, Footage Released

It is no secret that the Sega Saturn was all over the place as far as gaming goes.  Sega simply lost their way, lost their direction and drive to be #1 and that was no more apparent than the way the Saturn was handled.  That aside, gamers still got worked up over seeing 32-Bit Sonic the Hedgehog (never happened) for the first time.  One such update to the classic Sega speedster series was to be a title known as Sonic X-Treme, a title that never got released.  Reported by Hardcore Gamer a week ago, a Sonic Retro and Assembler somehow obtained a working prototype of Sonic X-Treme, including source code.  They have released a Youtube video of Sonic X-Treme running.  We have that video.

While Sonic X-Treme has been around for a while in the gaming community- there are many early builds, even the reportedly final build, out there and have been shown off countless times.  What makes this version of Sonic X-Treme interesting is that this is the only one with the source code and the files necessary to turn your PC into a Sega Saturn development kit.  The demands of the software are unique and not compatible with just “any” Windows computer.  That is the hitch in this announcement, not just anyone can download this version and run it and start developing Saturn games (man that would be great to see).sonicxtreme2

This source code and files will only run on a Windows 95 based PC using a Diamond Edge NV1 video card.  Yeah, not many of those still in operation in today’s world.  This is unique hardware and can give a little more insight into how Sega Saturn games were developed, maybe helping indie developers in the future.

PowerupGaming.co.uk recently posted an article on Sonic X-Treme where a video of this recently discovered prototype.  In the Youtube video (below) we see Sonic X-Treme running on the popular SSF Sega Saturn emulator.  Things are not all that great but that is to be expected as this is an early build of the game.  It is cool nonetheless.  We will keep you posted on this story as it develops.
