Hook, the movie starring the late Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman, was a decent flick. The movie was better than the games that were made for it (though the SNES and Sega CD versions had awesome soundtracks). For an intellectual property that is over 100 years old, the story holds up quite well, partly thanks in part to the many variations available in both printed and movie formats. Now some dedicated fans are working on making a version of Hook for the Atari 8-Bit computers. The interesting part is what version of Hook are they porting?
The Nintendo Entertainment System version seems to be the basis of this port judging by the graphics displayed in this video. The art styles are pretty similar as shown by these pictures.

This means that the Atari 8-Bit version is being modeled after the above mentioned movie starring the man that did many iconic roles in his career including the Genie in Aladdin. Anyone expecting photo realistic graphics, Dolby 5.1 sound or 3D graphics has definitely not been around gaming that long. The Atari 8-Bit platform is just not that detailed, nor powerful enough to even come close.
There is no definitive platform set for this port so it could end up on the Atari 7800 or one of the many Atari computers that shared similar hardware. We can surmise from the video that it is not coming to the Atari 2600 so we can rule that platform out.
As you can see in the video, this is an extremely early version of the port. There is no collision detection, no control mechanics other than left and right movement and there is no jumping shown off. This version of Hook does have potential to be something quite interesting for the Atari 8-Bit platform though.
We are working on getting more information on this port and will provide it to you, our readers, as quickly as we can.
Out of all of the movie licensed games, which ones rocked and which ones should have been left on the cutting room floor?
