Legend of Grimrock recently received a sequel (Indie Retro News has covered it extensively) but that has not stopped fans from continuing to support the original title. Fans have taken it upon themselves to create a mod for Legend of Grimrock featuring a faithful recreation of the classic Dungeon Master. For those that do not know, Dungeon Master is a grid based, first person, role playing game that gives you a party of four adventurers and pits you against a dangerous dungeon. For me, Dungeon Master was not my first exposure to this type of RPG, Alternate Reality: The Dungeon was. Alternate Reality and Dungeon Master share a lot of attributes, mainly differing in number of controllable characters- AR only gave you one.
Back to the Dungeon is obviously able to ramp up the detail levels far higher than the Amiga and Atari ST classic role playing game. Who can name the consoles that received a Dungeon Master port (there were a couple and one got the sequel). Most of the creatures that fans of Dungeon Master remember are present in Back to the Dungeon, just in higher detail with better animations. For fans of the genre, this is a must download mod for Legend of Grimrock. If we, as a community, support these types of endeavors (and the commercial products they use) then we might see more games in this sub-genre.
Legend of Grimrock is a new take on this genre, a sorely lacking sub-genre honestly. Thanks to the openness of Legend of Grimrock fans can take it upon themselves to do things like “Back to the Dungeon” and pull at the nostalgia strings of most gamers that call themselves, retro gamers.
Be prepared for extreme difficulty and puzzles that will make you scratch your head because Dungeon Master and Back to the Dungeon are old school challenges.
