Gekido: Urban Fighters was a brawler from way back in the 32-Bit era (it hit the Playstation in 2000). Due to when it was released, Gekido didn’t exactly enjoy stellar sales. The original Gekido was a Streets of Rage style brawler where you took on multiple enemies in a 3D environment (think Fighting Force but actually good). Now, NAPS, the developer behind Gekido, are planning on releasing a new version on “modern touch devices” sometime in 2015.
This new Gekido is only supported by a single screenshot that PocketGamer.co.uk has released but it looks pretty darn interesting. From the screenshot we can see that we will be, at least, playing as Travis from the original game fighting zombies in a 2D-ish environment (hopefully Double Dragon style levels will appear at some point). The graphical detail is quite high, at least right now it is. Best of all, this new Gekido appears to be hand drawn, not polygonal. Nothing beats great hand drawn art work in a game, sorry “pixel” fans.
Coming to “modern touch devices” could mean a few things. From the Nintendo 3DS and the Vita to iPhone and Android- touch controls are involved at some level. For the sake of sales and reaching the most fans, I hope this new Gekido hits as many platforms as possible.
The last time we saw Gekido it was on the Game Boy Advance in Gekido Advance: Kintaro’s Revenge.
We will keep you posted on updates on Gekido as we find out about them.
The Playstation classic Gekido is available on the Playstation Network.
