Okay, who reading this is a fan of the classics such as the Wing Commander series or X-Wing or Descent Freespace? Remember the fun of flying around huge ships, attacking and running like hell when things got too hot to handle? Well, it has been quite a while since we have seen a game in this style which makes Wings of Saint Nazaire all the more interesting. Wings is obviously a labor of love by people that not only know the classics but also cherish them. The design choices are interesting, the game looks phenomenal and we can hardly wait to play the final version.
The name “Saint Nazaire” holds special meaning for the games flag ship as it is symbolic to the city of the same name in France. In World War II, Saint Nazaire was instrumental and extremely important. The flagship in Wings is just the same so the name was used to convey that feeling. Nice touch there devs.
Wings of Saint Nazaire uses the Unity engine (could this mean an Android port in the future?) to create the huge space levels, detailed enemy ships and all of the pretty trappings that make Wings look so cool. Currently the devs are planning on getting Wings of Saint Nazaire on Steam but are not ruling out any other platforms that Unity runs on including Macintosh and Linux.
Fans of classic space shooting will want to check out Wings of Nazaire. They just don’t make games like this anymore (or at least often enough).
