The ZX Spectrum is a computer that was not widely available here in North America but over in Europe this thing rocked, and in some circles still does. We were recently contacted by the SpeccyJam people about covering the event, it won’t start till August 29th so you still have time to sign up. We will be doing our best to cover the event and the games that come from SpeccyJam here. For now, read the rules, sign up on their site and flex your retro programming muscles.
The full rules are available here. The paraphrased rules are below:
Game creation time: one week
Game limits: Use any engine, tool or whatever to create your game but it must “feel” like a ZX Spectrum release (if the hardware couldn’t realistically do it, you can’t do it here)
You are limited to the Spectrum resolution- 256×192 (let’s see some demakes folks!)
Oh, the color pallette is low- 15 colors (no photo realistic gaming here unless it is a Simpson cartoon)
Authentic sound effects are encouraged (the Speccy sounded a lot like the Road Runner if you need inspiration)
Head over to the SpeccyJam website for signup information (there is a really cool surprise for those that signup) and to get the full rules list.
