Bandit Gaming- Legend of Zelda – The Last Oracle In Development

The bastard child of the Zelda series, Zelda II, has become the inspiration for a fan game called The Last Oracle. The Legend of Zelda – The Last Oracle is a lot more action based than the Nintendo original but the resemblence is quite clear. Currently, The Last Oracle is in development with a demo available.

Legend of Zelda – The Last Oracle features some heavily upgraded graphics and sound versus the original release. There are four levels of parallax scrolling in the towns and action levels for instance. This is not a cheery Zelda adventure either, the tones definitely give the sense that this is a darker Hyrule infested with larger than life enemies.

So far, The Last Oracle is following the style of the Nintendo release with an overworld map to get around, enemies are visible/avoidable with the action taking place in side scrolling levels. If you are going to copy a classic, may as well be a polarizing one like Zelda II, right?

There is a demo available on Gamejolt as development continues (apparently Nintendo has not heard about this game yet).

It’s a real bummer that these guys who make fan games using Nintendo trademarks are never smart enough to release the source code so that when the inevitable C&D comes, someone in a less-legally-reachable country can continue it or turn it into something non-infringing.

(A notable exception is “Princess Rescue”, the Atari 2600 SMB clone which was taken off the market but is getting a much-deserved second life now with a zombie-themed rewrite.)

I have to whole heartedly agree with your comment raindog. There are a ton of great ideas that could be furthered along with a little help if the developer would simply open up the source code.
