Okay, how many of you reading this knew that Double Dragon had hit the Atari 2600 of all consoles? Many people still don’t know that Activision has actually attempted this feat, and the developer has accomplished it in 1989– years after the 2600 was already superceded by two new generations of Atari hardware! Check the video out below for proof of this port in action.
Activision had to make a ton of sacrifices to fit Double Drgaon into an Atari 2600 cartridge but I will be damned, they did it. Not in a very good way, but it is there. Kind of like porting Sonic or Mario to the Atari 2600, it can be done, it just isn’t very pretty and you probably have to ask yourself, is it worth it?
Someone named Matthew B has taken it upon himself to edit the atrocity that Activision unleashed onto the world. With Matthew’s edits, Double Dragon is somewhat playable, at least moreso than what Activision produced.
Retro Game Network has a breakdown of the major edits that Matthew has performed. The bottom line is that Double Dragon on the Atari 2600 is more playable and may even be enjoyable to some gamers.
