New Atari 2600 games have come out at a regular pace for the last few years as more and more people are learning the hardware. Some of these games are interesting (the ones we cover) but a lot are “eh” so we skip those (nothing personal to the developers). One interesting title that is continuing development is Cast of Doom. Castle of Doom is similar to Super Mario Bros if that Nintendo classic was a “one screen at a time” game set in a castle full of evil creatures that have the taste of blood in their mouths.
By now it is common knowledge that the Atari 2600 has trouble with scrolling games. There have been a few over the years that have tried with varying levels of success. Most developers go for the single screen style game since that is what the Atari 2600 excels at (and it is not a royal headache to work with).
Castle of Doom puts you in control of Bob, never a more powerful awe inspiring name for a game character has crossed the mind of a developer. Bob is the recipient of an invitation directly from the King (capital K so you know, it is the true head honcho) to come to his castle and have dinner.
Bob arrives at the castle and enters since that is the natural thing to do when visiting a castle, you don’t wait for the butler (for proof, see just about any horror movie involving a castle). Once Bob crosses the threshold and barely makes a few steps, the door slams shut and locks (did you see those movies?). This sets the adventure up, the question is, are you up for the adventure?
Castle of Doom is a 2D side scrolling affair. Platforms, pedastals and obstacles rest between your entry into the room and the exit.
Over on Atari2600Land.com you can grab the latest build of Castle of Doom and play it for yourself.
