Dream Walker: Alter Ego 2 follows the 2011 release, Alter Ego, this time from Russian programmers and using the ZX Spectrum. For people in North America, the ZX Spectrum is an anomaly of European gaming computers that we never really got to enjoy when new. Thanks to the proliferation of the Internet and emulators many have been able to enjoy classics that we were otherwise cut off from playing. Dream Walker: Alter Ego 2 is a unique ZX Spectrum title since it was created quite a while after the ZX Spectrum was no longer commercially available and uses a rarely used high color mode.
The world of Alter Ego 2 is filled with surrealism which fits in well with gaming. The protagonist in Dream Walker is a strange little boy that has had trouble making friends all of his life. In his dreams though, he had one special friend, and they go on adventures. The denizens of this dream world are known as Dream Walkers and they are none too happy about your infiltrating their world on a whim.
The gameplay of Dream Walker is similar to the original Alter Ego in that you have to switch, on the fly, with your cohort. Here it is your dream self, hence the name, Dream Walker in the title. Much like the original Alter Ego, Dream Walker, is played from a 2D side scrolling point of view with dangers interspersed throughout the levels. This is pretty much the same formula that most similar games use, why mess with a winning formula.
In each level you are given a certain number of “swaps” with your dream-self. This gives a level of challenge and strategy to Dream Walker and the level challenges that you will face.
