The Amstrad CPC did receive an official port of R-Type many years ago. To say it was lacking is an understatement. For one, the official port did not have a soundtrack (a big no-no in a scrolling shooter) and it was bogged down with slow down and lack of color (just look at the comparison shots below).
As you can see, the new fan creation goes a lot farther than the official game could ever have done no matter how hard you squint. R-Type is one of the most venerable old school scrolling shooters available. If you have not completed more than a few levels then you are not a true retro fan.
