Monster Party was one of those unique titles on the Nintendo Entertainment System that only saw the light of day in the United States. Couple that with the fact that the game was not exactly endearing to the Nintendo “quality” control scheme and Monster Party becomes even more of an enigma on the NES. Now, thanks to members of the NintendoAge.com forums, the Japanese version, Parody World: Monster Party, has been purchased, ROM released and reproductions are in the early planning stages.
Some striking differences between the two titles include the Japanese version featuring a cat in a box (Schrödinger’s cat reference?) and Audrey II (Little Shop of Horrors plant) being a boss. Those were all removed/changed in the North American version of the game. Weirdly, the rivers of blood, skeletons bleeding out of their eyes and more were deemed suitable by Nintendo for gamers to see (yet we cannot have gamers beating up transvestite brawlers in Final Fight).
