Staples of side scrolling action adventure games include a likeable protagonist, colorful levels to play through, about eight of them to be exact and baddies to thwart. Metanet Hunter- Remix has that stuff and a nice retro feel to boot.

Metanet Hunter is free of any DRM (that stuff that only hurts the legal minded gamers anyhow) and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. What to expect when you purchase Metanet Hunter is a challenging 2D side scrolling (with parallax scrolling backgrounds- a rarity all too often even today) and plenty of platforming action that should hearken any retro gamer back to their childhood.
