Cancer sucks. Plain and simple. It comes in many forms but the one we are discussing here is brain cancer. Why discuss this on a gaming site? Because in Canada’s Prince Albert there is a young man named Patrick who is suffering from this disease. Thanks to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Saskatchewan he was able to live out a wish. That wish was to be able to play a real life Super Mario Bros (only could have been cooler if Lou Albino was still around to play Mario).
50 volunteers from the foundation helped set this special event up which featured cast from Odyssey Productions (local theatre group of performers). As they say, the devil is in the details and this production had them covered. Goombas were accurately represented along with Koopa Troopas and even watery waves for the water levels made their presence known. The cool thing about this production is that they had two actors playing Mario, one tall for Super Mario and a shorter one for noraml Mario. That is cool no matter how you feel about the source material. This was all done for one special child going through hell right now.
Louis Gareau, Super Mario in the play, had this to say about the idea of playing the part, “I played Mario as a kid, I play Mario now, so [I was asked] if I would do it, and I said ‘Yeah, I’m down.’ I am absolutely ecstatic to be able to help this kid, and… if it’s what he needs in his life to keep him going then hey, I’m down to help.”
According to Retro Game Network, Patrick was able to beat bowser and save the Princess.
