The Dizzy games are recognized as one of the most successful European game series on computers and was published by Codemasters. The Dizzy games are mostly action/puzzle/platformers that feature a lot of logic puzzles to scratch your head at. The first Dizzy game, The Ultimate Collection hit in June of 1987 (about 27 years ago). Dizzy and the Rainbow Jewels is a freeware homage title by Steve “Granddad” Rennie.
Fans of the Dizzy series will be right at home with Dizzy and the Rainbow Jewels as this was obviously a labor of love for the series by a huge fan. The typical gameplay is alive and well here too, you control Dizzy and traverse the land talking to non-player characters and trying to solve some head scratching puzzles.
Interestingly enough, the Oliver Twins who were responsible for Dizzy’s early days, have given their consent to fans that might be interested in creating Dizzy inspired adventures. The few requirements include that these fan games must be free and they must respect the Dizzy property (you probably won’t see a scrambled eggs Dizzy game anytime soon).
Dizzy and the Rainbow Jewels has a little more complex gameplay than what gamers are probably used to. In Rainbow Jewels, Dizzy can carry up to four items and unless it is a key or given away, those items will remain in your inventory- even past their usefulness. This adds a bit of complexity to what would otherwise simply be a “Mario” style platforming game.
