Bandit Gaming: Hard Drivin’ Finally Released on NES in Beta Form

This article was originally posted on Gaming on Nintendo: Hard Drivin’ was one of those arcade games that was simply amazing for arcade goers of the time. From the cabinet to the game play, it was quite revolutionary for the time. Sure, now it doesn’t look like much but back then, it was quite a challenge to get good at it (HD was not a cheap game to play).

At the time, Mark Morris (the main programmer) was working for Tengen and took on the task of creating Hard Drivin’ on the quite under powered Nintendo Entertainment System (it also hit various computers and the Sega Genesis). Check the screens out, those are from the game actually running. Proof that it COULD have been done, though Tengen never okayed it and subsequently let it lay in limbo till Mark decided to release it through Lost Levels.

Those unfamiliar with Hard Drivin’ should know taht it is an unforgiving driving simulator that has some whacky addition (a loop de loop comes to mind). There is oncoming traffic to be concerned with also, though not as much (nor as much time to react) as in other versions, the NES version still holds it’s own.

Hit the Lost Levels for the interview with Mark Morris and a download link for the ROM file.  Special thanks to Retrocollect for the original article that brought this to our attention here at Gaming on Nintendo.
