Retro gamers know of one genre that is painfully gone from major publishers libraries. The scrolling brawler. Games like Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Knights of the Round and King of Dragons were all great side scrolling brawlers that were left in the 16-Bit era. Future iterations of this genre such as Fighting Force on Playstation, Nintendo 64 and PC (the Saturn version was cancelled) tried to continue the genre on 32-Bit platforms but it failed horribly. Now, indie developer Cesar Ortega is attempting to bring the genre back using the Unreal Engine 4.
Over on Android and iOS brawlers are still alive and kicking, and punching, coming from many Chinese companies and with varying results as far as quality goes. Skara: The Blade Returns looks to be a title that is at least worth checking out based on the graphics (brawlers NEVER looked this good).
The reason I mentioned King of Dragons and Knights of the Round in the opening paragraph is because Skara is very much in the fantasy realm. Not 300 fantasy but more Dungeons and Dragons fantasy so there will be some creative allowances taken with the game physics, levels and the like.
Currently Skara: The Blade Remains is on Kickstarter looking for funding. Over on Steam though, Skara has already passed the Greenlight process so look out for Early Access sometime next month.
