Demakes are a popular sub-genre of gaming and only growing as more and more people get into them. For the most part, many demakes which take a new game and fit onto a retro platform, are simply “proof of concept” releases- most are not actually games. Though there have been a few notable demakes that were actually games, such as Halo for the Atari 2600. The other side of demakes is that many are not licensed from, or endorsed by, the original copyright/trademark holders. One such current game that is getting a demake onto the Commodore 64 is Faster Than Light.
In Faster Than Light you are tasked with getting a crucial piece of information to your allies. That is the “easy” part because you are being pursued by the enemy, who are luckily for them a lot more better off with artillery/defenses than you are. Also, you are facing a long journey to even get close to your allies. There are tons of planets, stars, black holes and more unsavory things between you and the rest of the allies that you seek. Did I mention there are also more enemies?
Well, now thanks to fans, Faster Than Light is getting demade for the Commodore 64. Right now, it is just a “proof of concept” style work in progress but there is some gameplay available in the download and apparently a great soundtrack.
Grab Faster Than Light for the Commodore 64 at the C-64 Scene Database.
