The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is apparently not as dead as many would have thought. Sure, over the years there have been releases here and there but everything has been quiet recently. WaterMelon, the guys behind Pier Solar another Sega Genesis release, are hard at work on what is currently called Project Y. What is unique about this title is that it is a scrolling brawler like Final Fight (who saw that coming?).
Coming in at a minimum of 40 megs, according to the developer site, Project Y is going to be one of the biggest titles on the Genesis. It could be the biggest if it surpasses Pier Solar in size. This is not an easy task to take on, memory prices fluctuate and it is a challenge to fill that space.
The story for Project Y is set in a post-apocalyptic Asian area. Promising multiple play throughs to get everything, four playable characters (one is unlockable) and graphics that are quite detailed (check out the screens we were able to get), Project Y is shaping up to be an interesting release. At least it is not another scrolling shooter like what is dominating the Sega Dreamcast and Neo Geo scenes.
No word yet if this is going to go the Mutation Nation (on Neo Geo) style post-apocalyptic route with monsters and generally freaky enemies or not.
